December 21, 2018The Oyster Pointer, a local newspaper operated out of Newport News, is celebrating 30 years in publication. The publication has grown to a monthly distribution of 9,000 in almost 200 Peninsula locations. Most recently, Oyster Pointer was recognized with three awards in the 2018 Independent Free Papers of America (IFPA), an annual competition held in Philadelphia. The IFPA is a non-profit international trade association which represents 143 free circulation publishers through the United States and Canada. This year’s competition had 599 entries and Oyster Pointer was recognized in three categories. Oyster Pointer was awarded first place for an advertisement-large apace recognizing Bayport Credit Union. It also were awarded first place for its internet site (oysterpointer.net), with judges acknowledging the website is easy to read and navigating the site was quick and intuitive. Finally, the newspaper received a third place honor for its local business coverage, which included coverage of the new Holiday Inn Newport News at City Center.
The newspapers publisher and editor, Sylvia Weinstein, states “We are delighted to be recognized by such a prestigious association. We feel this is a great compliment to the paper”. Congratulations to Oyster Pointer on such an outstanding accomplishment.
