February 12, 2018Scratch Bakery started as a home-based business that opened its first storefront in 2011 in the Port Warwick area of Newport News. Scratch is best known for its custom cakes, oversized cupcakes, gooey bars and classic homemade desserts. After a year in Port Warwick, Scratch expanded to a larger space in the same area at 4181 William Styron Square and added a mobile cupcake van for events and festivals. Scratch Bakery now also has a location in the Phoebus area of Hampton to better reach the bakery’s growing customer base. Owner Lashonda Sanford credits the success of her business to the help of her husband of 20 years, Dedric Sanford, early supporters, and her team of employees.
Scratch offers 18 to 20 oversized cupcake flavors each day, as well as cobblers, gooey bars, cookies, and more. They sell cake by the slice and customers can order customized cakes for weddings, birthdays, baby showers, and other celebrations. Scratch also offers a variety of cake fillings, edible imagery, and 3D cake designs for specialty celebration cakes.
Their oversized cupcakes can be purchased individually or by the dozen in flavors like red velvet, toffee crunch, and death by chocolate. Scratch also sells lunch items including chicken salad sandwiches and chicken pot pies. Scratch Bakery has won the Daily Press Neighborhood Choice Award for Best Bakery in 2015 and 2016 for their wide variety of sweet treats and commitment to making the best quality product every time.
