Opening New Doors

Opening New Doors

Newport News is opening new doors with exciting events, innovative dining, and fresh food and beverage experiences. From vibrant gatherings to unique culinary destinations, the City is thriving as a hub for culture, connection and growth.

There’s much to mention, and munch on, when it comes to our growing infusion of contemporary culinary concepts. The City celebrated the Grand Opening of Corkscrews & Brews, a wine and coffee bar located in The Yard District. The business is owned and operated by entrepreneur Travis Reid. Corkscrews & Brews focuses on creating a relaxing environment where individuals can enjoy good food and drinks.

Also on 23rd Street, the IDA finalized its selection of an operator for the waterfront restaurant facility at 2295 Harbor Road. Antoine Bethea, the owner-operator of District 41 Sports Bar since 2021, will bring his new concept, 41 on Harbor, to the space. The restaurant will offer an affordable-upscale American dining experience, with plans to introduce weekend brunch service, and will provide an additional dining option Downtown, complementing the ongoing development on 23rd Street. $300,000 in funding awarded to the City from the Port Host Communities Revitalization Fund will support modernization of the facility.

In Summer 2024, Newport News introduced the exciting Drop the Mic Summer Concert Series in The Yard District, bringing music, food and community spirit to Victory Landing Park every Thursday. The weekly event brought residents and visitors Downtown to hear live performances by diverse musical acts, while enjoying stunning sunset views on the James River.

After achieving remarkable success at its 23rd Street location in the Yard District, Coastal Fermentory opens its second location, Coastal Fermentory Uptown, at Jefferson Avenue and Bland Boulevard in Jefferson Market Place. Coastal Fermentory has become a cornerstone of the vibrant energy revitalizing Downtown, earning accolades like the City’s inaugural Breakthrough Experiences Award. Coastal Fermentory is poised to bring the same community spirit, unique experiences and dedication to excellence to its new location.

In City Center, Chef Kenny Sloan’s latest restaurant Chef’s Market has quickly become a culinary destination. Opening in November 2024, Chef’s Market offers a diverse array of dining and entertainment options, featuring a butcher shop, retail space, fresh grab-and-go meals, an on-site brewery and distillery and live entertainment, darts and duckpin bowling.
