Innovation Grows Here

Strategic investments from global leaders reflect a shared commitment to economic growth, technological advancement and workforce development in Newport News, while reinforcing the City as a hub for innovation and advanced manufacturing.

Liebherr-America, Inc., a global leader in industrial mining machinery, committed to investing $74 million to enhance its manufacturing facility in Newport News and Hampton, a move set to create 175 new jobs in the region.

This strategic investment underscores Newport News’ pivotal role as Liebherr’s production hub for mining trucks. The project is supported by a $1.5 million grant from the Commonwealth’s Development Opportunity Fund, as well as Newport News’ Expansion/Relocation Cost Reduction Enterprise Zone Incentive. Additionally, Liebherr is eligible to receive benefits from The Port of Virginia Economic and Infrastructure Development Zone Grant Program and the City of Hampton.

Just this fall, Liebherr showcased its latest innovations making mining safer, more efficient and environmentally friendly. One standout moment was the debut
of its new autonomous, battery-electric T 264 haul truck and the unveiling of the PR 776 Generation 8 dozer. With a fuel-efficient engine and the option for remote control, it combines strength and tech to keep operators safer and more productive.

Canon Virginia, Inc. (CVI) announced plans to expand manufacturing operations at its Newport News facility. The expansion is a diversification of Canon’s existing business lines, focusing on scaling a cutting-edge method of isolating natural silk protein. This marks a significant shift for Canon Virginia, extending beyond its traditional focus on imaging technologies.

The expansion will also see 30 employees retrained to support the new production line. This new chapter further reinforces Newport News’ reputation as a global hub for innovation and manufacturing excellence.

The Virginia Economic Development Partnership and the City of Newport News played pivotal roles in securing the project for Virginia, with support from the Virginia Jobs Investment Program, which supports workforce retraining, $350,000 through the Virginia Investment Performance Grant, and Newport News’ Expansion/Relocation Cost Reduction Enterprise Zone Incentive.

“Canon Virginia’s success is built on a solid foundation of quality and sustainability. Since its establishment in Newport News in 1985, CVI has been a leader in advanced manufacturing technology, environmental stewardship and corporate social responsibility. We are excited about expansion in our great City and look forward to their next innovative endeavors.”
