Virginia’s 6,000+ manufacturers employ 239,000+ individuals, contribute nearly $50 billion to the gross state product and over 80% of the Commonwealth’s exports. Among those, Huntington Ingalls Incorporated – Newport News Shipbuilding is the largest industrial employer in Virginia, pioneering the development and production of technologically advanced, highly capable warships from our river banks. HII’s Newport News Shipbuilding division was awarded a 2024 Virginia Manufacturing Cup Award for building the Gerald R. Ford CVN 78 Aircraft Carrier. It was awarded by the Virginia Manufacturers Association (VMA) who is an empowering partner working to create the best business environment for world-class advanced technology companies to manufacture and headquarter operations
in Virginia with maximum profitability.
HII’s Newport News Shipbuilding, in collaboration with the U.S. Navy, the City of Newport News and the Commonwealth of Virginia, announced plans for a new parking garage designed to improve accessibility and enhance the daily experience for Shipbuilders and Sailors.
The $120 million investment was announced in June 2024, and is a transformative step for parking strategy in Downtown Newport News, adding 3,100 new spaces and improving the work environment. The garage will be constructed on existing Newport News Shipbuilding parking lots between 37th and 39th Streets, bordered by Huntington Avenue and Warwick Boulevard.
This collaborative effort is the first of several contemplated investments highlighting a commitment to enhanced infrastructure and support for the Navy and Newport News Shipbuilding, as well as the broader Newport News Downtown Community.
HII’s Newport News Shipbuilding division (NNS) hosted the christening ceremony of the Virginia-class submarine Arkansas (SSN 800) in December, celebrating production of the nation’s 27th Virginia-class fast attack submarine. In addition to building subs for the U.S. Navy, NNS will build as many as five (5) Virginia-class submarines to be purchased by the Royal Australian Navy as part of the AUKUS partnership, a tri-lateral strategic security alliance between Australia, the UK and the US. Numerous Australian companies were hosted in 2024 by the region to begin forging alliances with public and private stakeholders, and AUKUS has already had profound effects on the supply chain as it anticipates demand ramp-ups for thousands of maritime goods and services providers. Staff, along with the Hampton Roads Alliance, Hampton Roads Workforce Council and Commonwealth leadership, will continue working together on opportunities to attract expansions of these firms into Newport News and the region.
