Anderson’s opened in Newport News in 1954 and is still in its original location at 11250 Jefferson Avenue. Anderson’s is a third-generation, family-owned business that was started by Ruth and Paul Anderson, who were wholesale growers and had a passion for growing fresh and healthy plants from seed.
In 1972, their son Clark purchased the business and later built the main retail store building and added pottery, statuary, furniture, and a café. In 2005, Clark acquired more land with the vision of a bigger café. With the help of his stepson, Jason Blanchette, Clark added Sage Kitchen restaurant. Jason now manages Anderson’s, which continues to thrive and expand. Anderson’s recently opened a second location in the Red Mill area of Virginia Beach that is modeled after the Jefferson Avenue store.
