Expose Performing Arts

Expose Performing Arts opened its doors in September of this year at 467 Denbigh Boulevard. The business is owned and operated by John Alexis Bonilla. John opened his own business to share his dance experience, passion and vision with students and instructors from throughout the community.

John credits dance with changing the trajectory of his life and hopes to pass along some of the lessons he has learned to his students and instructors. A native of Puerto Rico, John was removed from his household as a child after suffering abuse. During this low time in his life, he started taking dance classes and realized that he had found his calling. By the age of 17, John was doing commercials, movies and teaching classes at a dance studio. For eight years, he served as a program director for a ballet program at a performing arts school and went on to serve as a spokesperson for overcoming abuse. In 2013, he moved to the Hampton Roads area and continued teaching and being involved in the world of dance.

John is excited and proud to operate his own studio in Newport News and strives to help students identify their inner strengths and build their self-confidence. The studio’s mission is to “provide an encouraging, supportive learning environment to foster the flame of creativity, and nurture the artistic spirit in every member of the institution, both students and instructors alike.”

Expose employs six instructors and offers a wide of range classes, including ballet, jazz, hip-hop, salsa, acrobatics and tap. The studio features a 4,000 square-foot space, with three separate themed dance rooms, and is the only dance studio in the region with spring floors. Future plans include adding to the studio’s competitive dance team and launching a new class for children with special needs.
