The City of Newport News has two state-designated Virginia Enterprise Zones. The zones span nearly every commercial and industrial area of the City and offer a variety of state and local grants, as well as local tax incentives, to qualifying businesses and investors. The Enterprise Zone Program is one of the most effective methods of using incentives to stimulate economic development through job creation and private investment. Last year, 19 businesses qualified for state incentives by investing over $40 million and hiring over 1,100 people in Newport News’ Enterprise Zones.
