June 16, 2016In just 90 seconds, the video captures all the outdoor fun available in Newport News – everything from water sports (canoeing, paddle-boating, kayaking, and sailing) to indulging in steamed crabs and roasting marshmallows. The video also gives viewers a quick peek at some of the outdoor art treasures found in Newport News and the free weekly concerts held under the stars every summer.
Newport News Park is in the midst of celebrating its 50th Anniversary this year and this video teases part of its 7,711 acres – nine times bigger than New York’s Central Park! The park provides a nature lover’s haven on the wooded shores of Lee Hall Reservoir. It’s here that visitors can explore the fascinating flora and fauna found at the park’s Discovery Center, rent a canoe, jon boat or paddle boat – or bring their own kayak, test their skills at the 18-hole championship disc golf course, skate, walk or jog along one of the 30 miles of trails through forest, field, and wetlands, or bring their own bicycle (or rent one from the park’s campsite office) to cycle along the 5.3-mile bikeway. Newport News Park also offers year-round camping, two public golf courses, archery, freshwater fishing, and a 30-acre aero-model flying field (where radio controllers can land their aircraft on a paved 400-foot runway).
