Freewheel Bicycle Shop is a full-service bicycle and accessory shop that is located at 12480-B Warwick Blvd. The business is family-owned and operated by Freddie James and his children. They have over 50 years of experience in the industry and consist of three generations of Air Force Service.
James developed a keen interest in bicycles at the age of nine, while his family was stationed in Germany. During his teenage years, after joining the Air Force, he completed a six-year Master Bicycle Technician Program. Through time and experience, James developed a strong reputation in the industry. Some years later, he was stationed in Newport News and decided to launch into business here on the Peninsula. His first store in the city opened in 2002, and it later moved to its current location.
The business has continued to grow and now has additional locations in Hampton, Norfolk, Petersburg, and a bicycle warehouse located in Franklin, Virginia. The company has fifteen employees and has a full-time service department for repairs. The business lat tires to complete bicycle restoration. In addition to sales and repairs, Freewheel also offers both short-term and long-term rentals. The shop is open from Tuesday through Saturday.
Freewheel’s reputation extends well beyond the local community. James has proudly contributed his expertise to four Olympic Games as a master technician for Olympic cycling teams.
The business also tries to introduce individuals to the bike community. On Tuesday and Thursday nights, Freewheel hosts family night group rides, during which participants take a route through various areas in Newport News. The experience is designed for beginner riders, including children, teenagers, and adults. The Freewheel Team also supports community events and non-profits. They serve as the repair technicians for the Police Unity Tour, which honors law enforcement officers who have fallen in the line of duty. They have also donated thousands of bikes within the United States and to other countries.
