The City of Newport News celebrated the Grand Opening of Corkscrews & Brews. The wine and coffee bar is located at 208 23rd Street, #300. The business is the newest addition to The Yard District.
This is another integral piece of our participation in the Bloomberg Harvard City Leadership Initiative’s Collaboration track. Newport News is strengthening its ability to employ the talents, resources, and energy of diverse stakeholders, working across sectors, jurisdictions, and agencies to solve complex problems and improve people’s quality of life. The Initiative is a collaboration between Harvard Kennedy School, Harvard Business School, and Bloomberg Philanthropies. It is providing research and learning to help Newport News develop collaborative approaches to transforming The Yard District.
A prominent facet of our participation is quality of life services for sailors and residents. Corkscrews and Brews offers another option to gather and dine in The Yard District.
The business is owned and operated by South Carolina native Travis Reid. Reid moved to the Peninsula in 2004 to attend the Apprentice School at Newport News Shipbuilding. After working there for 11 years, Reid decided to change career paths and begin his journey to entrepreneurship by opening a tax preparation business. The business was very successful and three years later, he and his wife decided to start a food truck business.
As time went on, he developed an interest in offering a food service business from a brick-and-mortar location. After looking at various potential locations, he decided to make 208 23rd Street the home of Corkscrews & Brews. The café has a variety of menu options including breakfast sandwiches, lunch sandwiches/wraps, and baked goods such as muffins, brownies, blondies, and cinnamon rolls. They also offer soups, charcuterie, and fresh smoothies. The drink offerings include teas, coffee, and lemonades along with a wine selection that includes frozen wines (Frose’) that are made in-house.
Corkscrews & Brews focuses on creating a relaxing environment where individuals can enjoy good food and drinks, and receive exceptional customer service. In the future, Travis looks forward to expanding with an additional location here in the Hampton Roads Region.
