Jefferson Lab (the Thomas Jefferson National Accelerator Facility) has received approval from the U.S. Department of Energy to double the power of its Continuous Electron Beam Accelerator to 24 gigaelectronvolts (GeV). The upgrade will allow scientists at the Lab to delve deeper into the mysteries of how quarks—subatomic nuclear particles—behave inside the atom. The $400 million project includes $310 million for the accelerator upgrade and $100 million to build a new experimental hall and refurbish an existing hall. Construction is expected to begin in 2009 and be completed by 2016. The upgrade will add 50 new permanent positions at Jefferson Lab and allow 200 to 400 more scientists to visit the Lab annually from around the world to conduct experiments in particle physics.
