December 23, 2008Continental, AG, the German multi-national automotive parts manufacturer, announced a $194 million expansion of its Newport News fuel injection systems plant. The expansion will also add 318 new jobs, more than one-third of which will be salaried. The expansion is a result of a consolidation of Continentals fuel injection system operations and its development of new gas fuel injection technology. Continental will move its diesel fuel injection system engineering, R&D and manufacturing operations from Columbia and Blythewood, South Carolina to Newport News.
Continental chose the Newport News plant to consolidate its fuel injection systems operation for a variety of reasons, including greater capacity for expansion and a more efficient layout at the Newport News plant; the quality, productivity and flexibility of its workforce in Newport News; and the cooperative attitude of both state and local government. This is Newport News third major project of more than $150 million in capital investment and more than 300 new jobs this year.
