Riverside Health System
Virginia Peninsula’s largest health care provider. It operates the largest hospital in the region with 576 beds, an extended care nursing facility, a rehabilitation center, mental health services and a wellness center with multiple locations. Specialty health care units include cardiac rehabilitation, radiation therapy, nuclear medicine, occupational therapy, renal dialysis and a cancer center. Riverside also contains an emergency trauma center with a Level II certification. Riverside’s Diagnostic Imaging Center in Oyster Point is also accredited as a Breast Imaging Center of Excellence by the American College of Radiology, placing it in the top 2% of such facilities in the nation.
Mary Immaculate Hospital
Part of the Bon Secours system, this is a 110-bed hospital, plus a nursing care facility. Mary Immaculate is a leader in providing home–oriented birthing environments in a hospital setting. The philosophy of the hospital, as set forth by the Bernadine Sisters, provides that health care must be comprehensive and personalized with attention to treating the whole person through physical, emotional and spiritual care. Medical services offered at Mary Immaculate include one–day surgery, laser surgery, intensive care, dialysis, arthroscopy, endoscopy, radiology and speech pathology.
Sentara CarePlex Hospital
Located nearby in Hampton, this is a technologically advanced acute care facility with leading technology including one of the area’s first “smart” operating rooms and a campus–wide fiber optic backbone to support transfer of filmless, digital diagnostic images. Other features include outpatient diagnostic imaging, advanced surgical capabilities, hospitalist program, Cancer Institute, and one of the state’s largest emergency departments. Two medical office buildings on the campus provide access to hundreds of specialists.
Mental Health
Outpatient mental health services are provided in Newport News by the Riverside Psychiatric Institute, Mary Immaculate Family Focus and more than 80 counseling agencies, psychologists and psychiatrists. More than 60 additional counseling agencies, psychologists and psychiatrists have offices on the Virginia Peninsula. Inpatient mental health services are available at Keystone Newport News and the Pines Residential Treatment Center in nearby Hampton.
Clinics
Urgent care facilities in Newport News are operated by the Riverside, Bon Secours and Sentara health care systems. Sentara operates a major medical complex at the entrance to Port Warwick, one of the city’s impressive mixed–use developments. Pediatric clinics are operated by Riverside and the Children’s Hospital of the Kings Daughters, which has opened a major medical complex in the Oyster Point business park in Newport News. Physical and occupational therapy clinics are operated by Riverside and Mary Immaculate.
Long-term and nursing care
A full range of long–term care solutions is available in Newport News. These include retirement communities, convalescent facilities, assisted living and nursing homes. More than two dozen nursing homes are located on the Virginia Peninsula (13 of which are in Newport News). Many of these facilities provide assisted living options, as well. There are 16 retirement or assisted living communities in Newport News, with an additional 14 located elsewhere on the Virginia Peninsula.
