Mühlbauer International, a technology partner for the smart card, ePassport and solar back-end industry, celebrated the grand opening of its Smart Factory Competence Center, the newly-expanded space in the company’s Newport News location in Oakland Industrial Park. Located on Picketts Line, this facility has served as a base for Mühlbauer’s North American business activities since 2009. Prior to expanding, the property occupied 33,115 square feet of office/assembly space, and employed a staff of 31. Construction of an additional 51,200 square feet was completed in December 2017, and houses a showroom primarily for product demonstrations and training, with some additional assembly capacity. The project created 15-20 additional jobs and represented a $12 million dollar investment.
The two-day celebration event included a reception and ribbon cutting ceremony featuring the company’s founder, Josef Mühlbauer and Mayor Price, as well as tours and demonstrations of Mühlbauer’s latest technology.
